What Should I Do After a Rideshare Accident?

It’s important to protect your interests. If you are a regular user of rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft, you need to know what to do in the event of an accident. While it seems straightforward, there are a few key differences that make rideshare accidents a little more complicated than traditional car accidents.

Verify and Report

Once the vehicle comes to a complete stop, check yourself for injuries. If you can move without pain, get out of the car. If you experience any pain in your bones or see any blood, call an ambulance immediately.

If no one is hurt, you need to report the incident. Open your rideshare app, select the ride options, and choose “my ride had an accident.” This sends a report to the rideshare company, opening a case and letting them know that the ride was unsuccessful. If your driver does not report the accident on their app, ask that they do so.

You may also wish to use the police non-emergency number to file a formal police report

Exchange Information

After looking for injuries and reporting the crash, you should exchange insurance information. You need to get both drivers’ information. As you were the passenger, it can be difficult to determine who is at fault. Giving this information to your insurance company and your attorney will be a big help in determining which driver was at fault.

Go to the Doctor

After the accident, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. If there’s bleeding or obvious damage, go to the emergency room. If there’s no obvious pain, make sure you go to the doctor within three days.

Some injuries aren’t immediately obvious. Going to the doctor early tells the rideshare company that your injuries were serious and helps you identify hidden damage as quickly as possible. The sooner you get treatment, the sooner you’ll recover.
